Increased security, transport disruptions

Climate activists associated with "Just Stop Oil" plan to stage a two-week campaign around London, starting Nov. 28, to protest against the government issuing licenses for new fossil fuel extraction. The protests are likely to take the form of short-notice roadblocks on main roads, including the M25 orbital motorway. Other protests, including climbing gantries above motorways, high-profile protests in art galleries, and at fossil fuel-related company headquarters, are also likely.

Authorities will deploy additional police to monitor the situation and disperse activists. The protests and related security measures will likely prompt significant congestion, especially if on the M25 motorway. Increased traffic congestion is also likely on surrounding roads as drivers seek alternative routes. Lingering disruptions are likely after activists are dispersed as traffic flows return to normal.

This renewed campaign follows a six-week protest period in October and November; during the previous action 755 activists were arrested and 182 charged with offenses.
